In the pantheon of early smartphones, the HTC HD Mini (released in April 2010) occupies a strange, forgotten corner. It was the "little brother" to the iconic HTC HD2—a device with a legendary custom ROM community. The HD Mini, however, was different. It was smaller, underpowered, and ran Windows Mobile 6.5.3 , not Android.

For messaging, the HD Mini is a beautiful, tragic reminder of why Windows Phone failed before Windows Phone 7 even launched. If you see one on eBay for $20, buy it for the nostalgia—but keep your SIM card in an Android or iPhone. Have an old HTC HD Mini collecting dust? Share your memories of using it in the early WhatsApp days in the comments below.
