Training is brutal. Maverick pushes Jake into unrecoverable scenarios—engine flameouts, flat spins, head-on merges. During one mock dogfight, Jake gets a missile lock on Maverick but refuses to fire, screaming, "I won't be you!"

The mission. Four Super Hornets against five drones. The canyon is a blender of granite walls and SAM radar.

Maverick: "He said, 'Tell my son I was wrong. And tell Pete... thanks for the save.'"

FLASHBACK (quick cut): His father, Hollywood, sobbing at a dining table, 1995. "Maverick left me hanging. He broke high aspect. I took the fault. I took everything ."

Maverick's voice, breaking up: "That's a kill, kid. That's a goddamn kill."

Jake refuses to believe it. His hatred for Maverick deepens. A real-world crisis emerges: A rogue state (fictional: "North Kheria") has stolen five advanced stealth drones armed with bunker-busters. The only way to destroy them before launch is a low-level canyon run through a defended mountain pass—no satellites, no GPS. Pure pilotage. Training is brutal

Maverick ejects. On the ground, he grabs Jake by the flight suit. "You're right. You won't be me. You'll be worse. You'll be dead. And your father will have to bury his son—because he taught you to fear the sky."

Jake breaks down. Maverick pulls him into a one-armed hug. Four Super Hornets against five drones

The last drone locks onto a civilian dam. Maverick has no missiles left. He orders Jake: "Boresight merge. Guns only. I'll draw his fire."

The mission: "Operation Afterburn."

Maverick looks at Jake. "Your dad came to see me. Last year. Before he... passed. He told me to tell you something."
