(known for Kirby’s Dream Buffet and Disney Magical World ) and published by Neos Corporation in Japan, the game follows the mischievous kindergartener Shinnosuke "Shin" Nohara and his loyal dog Shiro.

Unlike the previous game’s rural and nostalgic setting inspired by My Neighbor Totoro , Coal Town introduces a unique dual-world mechanic: the real rural village of Akita, and a mysterious, magical “Coal Town” (a retro-futuristic mining town accessible via a train that appears at night). After summer vacation begins, Shin and his family (Hiroshi, Misae, Himawari, and Shiro) visit Misae’s friend’s house in a quiet, nature-rich village in Akita Prefecture. While exploring, Shiro chases a small, coal-black creature and disappears. Shin follows and discovers a strange, soot-covered train that transports him to Coal Town – a bustling, dimly lit town where everything is powered by coal crystals, and residents live under a permanent starry sky (no sun).
