Raquel is the mother of the infamous villain (played by Gloria Pires). While Fátima sells her own mother’s apartment for money, Raquel starts as the victim. But the genius of the story is her arc: by the end, Raquel becomes obsessed with wealth and status, willing to bend her own morals.

The famous opening theme, “Brasil” by Gal Costa, and the repeated line “Vale tudo? ” (“Anything goes?”) still echoes in Brazilian political and social debates.

If you’ve only seen Regina Duarte as the girl next door, you haven’t seen her true power. Her Raquel in Vale Tudo is a masterclass in tragic downfall—proof that the best villains are the ones who start out just like us.
