What makes “Testimony” so brilliant is that the villain of the episode isn’t Fred or Serena—it is . The defense attorney, appointed to the Waterfords, does what any good lawyer would do: she pokes holes in June’s story. She asks June why she didn't run sooner. She suggests June had "relative freedom" as a Handmaid.
However, the episode doesn't let June off the hook either. After her testimony, she is told that because Fred and Serena are high-profile defectors, a plea deal might be in the works. The system, June realizes, doesn't care about justice; it cares about leverage. This revelation pushes June back toward the darkness we saw in the previous episode. She realizes that words in a courtroom might not be enough. “Testimony” is a bottle episode in the best sense of the term. It relies entirely on dialogue and performance, and it delivers.
