Khatta Meetha , directed by Priyadarshan and starring Akshay Kumar and Trisha Krishnan, is far from a typical slapstick comedy. Instead, it’s a surprisingly sharp social satire wrapped in the guise of a chaotic entertainer. Akshay Kumar shines as Sachin Tichkule, a small-time, morally flexible contractor trapped in a web of corruption, bureaucracy, and family drama.

What works brilliantly is the film’s unexpected tonal shift. The first half delivers classic Priyadarshan-style absurd humor (complete with hilarious supporting characters), but the second half takes a darker, more political turn, exposing the real-life horrors of potholes, municipal corruption, and corporate greed. The courtroom sequence, in particular, is gripping and surprisingly emotional.

Not your typical feel-good comedy. Khatta Meetha is an uneven but brave film that blends laughter with outrage. Watch it for Akshay Kumar’s career-best performance in a grey role and for its unforgettable, heartbreaking climax.

Trisha delivers a solid performance as the idealistic girlfriend, and the supporting cast—especially Rajpal Yadav and Asrani—adds the perfect comic relief. While the shift in tone can feel jarring, the film’s underlying message about systemic rot in public works is bold for a mainstream Hindi film.
