This review examines how transgender people have shaped, and been shaped by, mainstream LGBTQ culture—highlighting both triumphs and persistent challenges.
Early homophile movements of the 1950s–60s often excluded gender non-conforming people. However, the 1969 Stonewall Riots—a cornerstone of LGBTQ mythos—were led by trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Despite this, mainstream gay and lesbian organizations frequently sidelined trans issues in the 1970s–80s, prioritizing gay rights (decriminalization, marriage) over gender identity protections. This created a legacy of "trans exclusion" within parts of LGB culture, culminating in the rise of trans-exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs) within some lesbian circles.
