Historically, the "T" was added to "LGB" activism because trans people faced the same oppressive systems—police harassment, employment discrimination, housing insecurity, and HIV/AIDS neglect. However, their needs are unique. An LGB person does not need access to gender-affirming healthcare or legal gender recognition. Recognizing both the connection and the difference is key to allyship. Part 3: History – Shared Roots, Divergent Paths The modern LGBTQ rights movement was galvanized by the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City. While mainstream history often highlights cisgender gay men, trans women of color—specifically Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera—were on the front lines. They fought back against police brutality and founded crucial organizations like STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) to house homeless trans youth.

  1. In search of peace

Our hands bend iron for sickles,
but the heart starts to imagine
    our enemies’ necks as grasses

    When I read these lines
    I thought what an image!
    They were enough for me
to reach for my Visa card.
    I also loved watching him
    performing live. The first
    poem he read about
wanting to be a river to
emigrate but still be at home
    was marvellous.
    Thanks for the introduction Peter.

  2. Thank you so much for posting this. I enjoyed Beweketu’s poetry even more than his novels through the years. I also hope his previous poetry works would be translated into english to reach a larger audience.
