That’s when I felt it—a pressure behind my eyes, like learning a new alphabet in fast-forward. The walls of the lab began to shimmer. Not change color, but mean something different. Every edge, every shadow, started to look like a letter I almost knew.
A window popped up. Not a progress bar, not a file prompt. Just text, old-style monospaced, green on black:

“Elena Vance,” I said.
“Cancel!” I shouted.
Dr. Vance downloaded font T1 on a Thursday. She did not understand what she was installing until it was too late.
The cursor blinked on an empty terminal. Late nights in the lab always felt like this—too quiet, too bright, too promising.
The screen flickered.
I pushed back from the desk. “What? No—stop.”
"Font T1 download," I typed.
I frowned. I didn’t remember the lab’s systems having voice auth, but maybe it was part of the new security patch.
