In his hand, he held a piece of white chalk—not the magic black one, but a simple, hopeful piece of limestone. He wanted to give it to her as a symbol. He wanted to say, “I am not a pig. I am a boy.”

But the village’s cruelty was a patient animal. When Jabya’s younger sister, Pori, dared to drink water from the upper-caste well, a mob descended. They didn’t beat her.
