If you love old-school, no-compromise action masala, Alex Pandian (1990) is a must-watch. It’s a time capsule of late-80s/early-90s Tamil commercial cinema at its most explosive.

The soundtrack was a hit, especially the song “Maasi Maasam” and the energetic intro number “Vetri Kodikattu” , which is still played at Vijayakanth fan club events. A Note on the Confusion You might also hear about a 1994 film called "Alex Pandian" starring Prashanth. That is a different film—a lesser-known action drama. However, for 90% of Tamil audiences, the name belongs exclusively to the 1990 Vijayakanth classic. (Note: A 2013 film Alex Pandian starring Karthi also exists, but it shares only the title, not the story or legacy.) Legacy Vijayakanth later played another iconic cop, Captain Prabhakaran (1991), but Alex Pandian remains the raw, gritty original. The film’s success proved that a hero didn’t need romantic duets in Switzerland to win—just a khaki uniform, a powerful dialogue delivery, and a flying kick.

S. A. Chandrasekhar knew how to write for the masses. Dialogues like “Indha kai rendum en kai illai... indha kaal rendum en kaal illai... ivai ellam dharmathin kayal, neethiyin kaal” (These hands are not mine... these legs are not mine... they are the hands of righteousness and the legs of justice) became anthems in B and C centers.

Before the Singam series or Kaithi , there was Alex Pandian. The film established the template of the khaki-clad, chain-smoking, morally absolute cop in Tamil cinema.
