But beneath the warmth, there’s a deep, unspoken sadness. Through adult Sophie’s retrospective lens, small cracks appear: Calum is only 30 but seems exhausted. He practices tai chi alone on his balcony at dawn, weeping. He rolls a cast on his broken wrist (which he claims happened by slipping) and goes without meals to afford a shared rug. He disappears alone into the dark sea late at night. The film subtly reveals that Calum is suffering from severe depression and possibly suicidal thoughts.

On the surface, the vacation is ordinary: swimming, playing arcade games, eating ice cream, and awkward karaoke. Young Sophie is at the cusp of adolescence—curious, observant, and eager to connect with her father. Calum (Paul Mescal) is a loving, gentle, and attentive dad. He teaches her tai chi, tries to fix her sunburn, and dances with her.

The story follows Sophie, a young woman looking back at a vacation she took with her father, Calum, when she was 11 years old (played by Frankie Corio). The film cuts between the 1990s summer holiday at a budget resort in Turkey and the present day, where an adult Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall) reflects on those memories through camcorder footage.
