After Leo left—cape fluttering, mother hopeful—Lena sat with the manual. She began coding. Item B1: Unusual Eye Contact? Leo had looked at her hands, her watch, the bubbles. Rarely her eyes. Score 2. Item B4: Quality of Social Responses? He had responded, but often with tangential declarations about kings. Score 2. The algorithm began to darken.

The manual had no code for that.

She turned to the “Construction Task.” Show the child how to stack blocks in a specific pattern. Note if they imitate. Leo stacked them into a wobbly tower, then knocked it down. She led Leo to the room with the bubbles, the small figures, the picture book about a frog. The manual said: Present the bubbles. Wait for the child to request more. Leo didn’t ask. He just watched the bubbles rise, then popped each one with a fingertip, smiling slightly. She began coding

Leo looked at her. For a second, she felt seen—not assessed, but truly seen. Then he picked up a small doll, placed it on his head, and declared: “The king is here. The king is cold.”
